10.00h - 18.00h
McNeel Europe S.L.
Roger de Flor, 32-34 bajos
08018 Barcelona (Spain)

A 3-day Orca3D + ExpressMarine workshop, co-organised by McNeel Europe and Nick Danese Applied Research, will be at McNeel Europe’s Barcelona offices, 11-13 July.

Orca3D is a naval architecture plugin for hull design, hydrostatics and intact stability, performance prediction and weight tracking.

ExpressMarine, now in its version 2, enables ship designers to build up parametric 3D models of marine structures rapidly. The main advantage of the plugin is a dramatic reduction of modeling time, but more fundamentally to allow developing the 3D structural model very early in the design process.

In this three-day workshop participants acquire an in-depth understanding of the scopes of Orca3D and ExpressMarine. They go through hands-on exercises, from initial hull design, foundations of fairing technics, hull fairness assessment, hydrostatics and stability checks, to creating a parametric structural model with ExpressMarine. The workshop is the occasion to discover the synergy offered by these complementary plugins, for example through the automatic update of the structural model from an update Orca3D hull form.

Day 1

  • Orca3D Properties
  • Rhino refresher: modeling aids, Gumball, geometry edition
  • Hull assistants
  • Foundations of modeling and fairing techniques
  • NURBS theory
  • Point control
  • Surface analysis

Day 2

Robotic Fabrications workshop at AA Hooke Park (UK) - 26 July – 5 August, 2018

Robotic Fabrications – Circular Saw Tactics
Architectural Association Hooke Park (UK)
26 July – 5 August, 2018
roboticfabrications.aaschool.ac.uk

Robotic Fabrications Visiting School is a series of architectural experiments based at the Architectural Association's Hooke Park campus. Operating as an experimental research branch of the AA’s Design + Make programme, Robotic Fabrications reinvents and hijacks traditional making techniques and tools – applying them to innovative processes for architecture.

This year’s programme, Circular Saw Tactics, will operate on small timber sections with precision and high speed, producing exquisite components. The weapon of choice – a circular saw – will gain an augmented level of control when wielded by the large KR-150, allowing users to perform operations with surgical precision. In Phase 3 of the visiting school, participants develop the skin of the foundry. To generate large composite wing structures, participants will test this new tool and the robot to their limit – fostering the cross-fertilization of manual and automated skill.

The pace of Robotic Fabrications is furious. By merging timber construction with cutting-edge robotic fabrication and 3D scanning technologies, the programme offers a hands-on introduction to the world of robotics through the format of a 10-day visiting school. Robotic Fabrications is open to current architecture and design students, young professionals and anyone interested in the relationship between fabrication and technology.

Application Deadline – 13 July 2018

Digital Design and Production in Architecture workshop at Politecnico Di Milano - July 2018

Digital Design and Production in Architecture workshop
Politecnico di Milano
From Tuesday July 3rd To Friday July 13th , 2018

The workshop Digital Design and Production in Architecture, organized by INDEXLAB – Politecnico di Milano, offers a new vision of architecture and its manufacturing methodologies.

While 20th Century architecture focused on mass production and serial repetition of its components, today’s architecture will be strongly characterized by varied and unique elements, industrially produced through advanced CNC fabrication machines. At the same time, the rise of novel programming platforms for design generates processes and algorithms that allow the control of form and technological aspects from the first conceptual stages of the design till the construction phase. This makes it possible to integrate aesthetics and functionality, structural resistance and energy performance within one coherent design process.

In defining such “design to production” workflow, both fabrication and material limits and potentials play a crucial role in generating competitive logical construction systems. Robots and CNC machinery contribute to the redefinition of design methodologies and construction processes, transferring most of the manufacturing from the building site to industrial production, where advanced components, integrating structure and envelope, can be designed and fabricated into complex solutions with high aesthetic and functional value.

The workshop aims to bring together visionary companies, advanced designers, and innovation-oriented students to envision new synergies between academic research, architectural practice and industrial production.

New Machine Learning Examples with LunchBoxML

The Neural Network

Now for you, Proving Ground has new machine learning examples with the LunchBoxML plugin for Grasshopper.

Last year, Proving Ground introduced LunchBoxML – a machine learning plugin for Grasshopper and Dynamo that uses the Accord Framework. Now, LunchBoxML introduced a few new examples to show the application of Gaussian Mixture and Neural Network components.

The Gaussian Mixture model demonstrates an unsupervised learning algorithm to group 3D panels based on geometry attributes for size and shape.

The Neural Network example demonstrates a simple supervised learning algorithm that uses training data about space attributes (area, length, and width) and their resulting classification (office, conference, etc.).

The Accord.NET Framework is a .NET machine learning framework combined with audio and image processing libraries written in C#. It is a complete framework for building production-grade computer vision, computer audition, signal processing, and statistics applications.

Snøhetta's radiating landscape

In Lund in southern Sweden, Snøhetta has designed a functional landscape park to radiate from the synchrotron radiation laboratory MAX IV. The landscape functions to mitigate ground vibrations.

Testing revealed that traffic on the nearby highway caused ground vibrations that could influence the laboratory's experiments. The flatter the landscape, the more vibrations reach the site. The more chaotic the landscape, the fewer vibrations reach the site.

The 3D modeling proved crucial. Snøhetta established the design layout by extracting the nature of vibrations into rational values inserted in Grasshopper. The mounds pitch and roll at a wavelength pattern that corresponds to the traffic vibration, while responding to the circular form of the synchrotron building.

Landscape Architecture Magazine looks at it this way:

Simply say the word "parametric" in a room of architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and planner, and you will be met with a lot of eye rolling. This is not unwarranted--what is essentially a form generating method with considerable aesthetic appeal has, for at least the past decade, often been treated as an end, and not a means. Rules are fed into the program, and three-dimensional forms result. The description of inputs is expectedly complex, but reflects actual conditions on site and produced outputs that have an actual, measurable impact. In the case of MAX IV, the wavelength of the traffic vibration, tangent lines extending from the 528-meter circle of the synchrotron, and a set of waves radiating out from it were plugged in to create an amplitude--resulting in a bumpy surface--to reduce the on-site vibration to as close to zero as possible. Jenny Osuldsen, a project architect with Snøhetta, said, "For once we can use parametric design in a real way."
