Course description:
In this class you'll learn to create and edit accurate free-form 3D NURBS models. This fast-moving class covers most of Rhino's functionality, including the most advanced surfacing commands. You'll also learn concepts and features of Grasshopper at an accelerated pace in an instructor-led hands-on instruction environment. The advantages of using Grasshopper in preliminary design and concept development come to life since the students will be able to create their models on a 3D printer and a laser machine.

Rhinocenter welcomes David Rutten to tutor a two-day beginners Grasshopper course in Turku, Finland.

Grasshopper is a graphical algorithm editor for designers exploring new shapes using generative algorithms. David Rutten of Robert McNeel & Associates is the designer of Grasshopper and a worldwide authority on generative design.

Course Fee: EUR 995 (+VAT). Please note that your seat is only confirmed once payment has been cleared. Full-time students and university teachers (proof of status required) will get a discount if there are seats left.   

Maximum Number of Participants: 8 participants. If there is no quorum, the course will be canceled 15 days before the start date of the workshop (October 12th).

Construct3D 2018 is a 3D printing, digital fabrication conference, and expo focused on academic use, best practices, and professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, and students. This year, Georgia Tech hosts the event.

The Rhino for Educators Workshop is a comprehensive, one-day introductory class, where you will learn the basics of creating and editing accurate 3D models. This fast-moving class covers how to start using Rhino to develop models for both rendering and digital fabrication. The day will start with an introduction and progress rapidly to more advanced surfacing commands and preparing models for 3D printing. This class is designed to be “hands on.” However, feel free to join us even if you do not have a computer.

"Instancia" wins at the XII Salón del Agua in Colombia

Congratulations to Ramón Galvis Centurión for his artwork Instancia which won first place within 158 participating works in the category “Other Visual Manifestations” at the XII Salón del Agua in Cúcuta, Colombia.

Instancia is an artwork which captures the significant moment in the flow of a dynamic body of water. It helps give form to the intangible and movement within a static object.

The piece was designed using Rhino, Grasshopper, and Bowerbird. It was manufactured with the use of special laser cutting machines to ensure that the pieces that made up the waffle structure were cut precisely and accurately. It was designed to be displayed suspended from the ceiling or exhibited raised 1.2 meters above the floor.

10 reasons why every designer should learn 3D

Rhino and Grasshopper were used by BMW to create the complex geometry of the “Alive Geometry” for the Vision Next 100 Concept.

Car Body Design recently published a very nice article about
why every designer should learn 3D:

"Despite all the advancement in digital technologies, as you have probably noticed most design-related websites and magazines are still dominated by 2D images: from sketches to drawings and renders, bidimensional images are still crucial in the creative design stage – which is not a bad thing, as they are still the fastest way to visually communicate and explore new ideas.

Additionally, 3D modeling has been often associated with the creation of the final, high quality CAD models – the so-called Class A surfaces – that are used for final engineering and production. This is the task of CAD/CAS (Computer Aided Styling) specialists and it’s a very time-consuming process, guided by technical requirements rather than creativity.

All this can lead design students – as well as all those who are interested in becoming designers – to think that learning 3D is not strictly necessary.

Instead, creative designers should approach 3D in a different way: as a tool that expands their creative possibilities, increases efficiency and improves the final quality of the products.
